1、Science moves forward, they say, not so much through the insights of great men of genius as because of more ordinary things like improved techniques and tools.
【分析】
简单句。句子的主语是science,谓语是moves forward, they say是插入语，后面的成分均是方式状语。方式状语中使用了 not so much…as…“与其说是…，不如说是…”结构；like improved techniques and tools 作 ordinary things的后置定语。翻译时，插入语they say 可置于句首，they指代“新学派科学家”；由于主句Science moves forward较短，可译为名词性结构“科学的发展”，作句子主语，而把方式状语引导词through和because of译为动词“源于”，作句子谓语；后置定语like improved techniques and tools 前置译。

句子主语为a leader of the new school，谓语为contends，宾语为引号里面的内容。宾语部分的主干为 the scientific revolution …was the improvement and invention and use of a series of instruments；as we call it 为插入语，后面that引导的定语从句修饰先行词the improvement and invention and use of a series of instruments。翻译时，主谓部分提前，“In short”应置于谓语之后，与后面的宾语成分译在一起；插入语as we call it可译为形容词结构 “我们所谓的”；定语从句可采用重复先行词的方法单独翻译成句。
【点拨】
1、reach作名词时意为“（手、能力、智力、影响等)可及之范围”，本句中指科学发展的范围。 2、innumerable“无数的，数不清的”。
【译文】
新学派的一位领袖人物坚持说：简而言之，我们所谓的科学革命，主要是指一系列器具的改进、发明和使用，这些改进、发明和使用使科学发展的范围无所不及。
