3、Social science is that branch of intellectual enquiry which seeks to study humans and their endeavors in the same reasoned, orderly, systematic 1, and dispassioned manner that natural scientists use for the study of natural phenomena 2.
【分析】多重复合句。主句是系表结构Social science is that branch of intellectual enquiry。which 引导定语从句，修饰先行词intellectual enquiry。从句中介词短语in...phenomena作其方式状语，其中包含that引导的定语从句，修饰限定manner。翻译时定语从句要层层剥开，与主句分开译。方式状语in…manner在从句中可前置翻译。
【点拨】1、branch 意为“分支”。2、intellectual enquiry 直译为“智力的询问”意译为“知识探索”。3、endeavor作名词讲时意为“努力、尽力；进取心”，此处意译为“行为、活动”。4、in the same manner意为“以同样的方式”。 5、dispassioned意为“冷静的、理性的、客观的”，不可译为“不动感情的、冷漠的”。
【译文】社会科学是知识探索的一个分支，它力图像自然科学家研究自然现象那样，用理性的、有序的、系统的和冷静的方式去研究人类及其行为。

【分析】简单句。句子的主语和谓语被分词结构隔离。主干为 The emphasis on data… makes this study a…social science。过去分词短语 gathered first-hand 作 data 的后置定语。combined…present是过去分词结构作状语，其中包含过去分词短语brought…present，作perspective 的后置定语。翻译时注意:emphasis和analysis 名词转译为动词；data和perspective的定语前置，翻译成动宾结构；make的宾语补足语补充说明study，译时 增加动词“成为”。
【点拨】1、the emphasis on意思内“对…的强调”。 2、 first-hand是副词，转作data的定语后译作“第一手的”。3、perspective的含义较多，在此取“视角”之意。4、bring…to原意为“把…带到”，引申为“采用，使用”。 5、cultures past and present可译为“古今文化”或“过去和现在的文化”，不可译作“文化的过去和现在”。6、distinctly意为“显然，明显”，不可根据形容词distinct的释义而译成“有区别地”或“不同地”。
【译文】强调收集第一手资料，加上在分析过去和现在的文化形态时采用跨文化视角，使得研究成为一门独特并且重要的社会科学。
