Call the shots原来的意思是“明白无误地表现自己的愿望或想法”，但是射箭（shot）为何出现在这个短语中了。让我们结合一个类似短语来找到一些端倪。Call one’s shot这一短语产生的由来是：在射箭之前，射手为了表示剑手的剑术高超，通常会宣布他宣布他射向的目标，但是如果有别人替射手，射手就必需按照别人宣布的目标瞄准射箭。这种射箭项目中帮帮射手决定射击行为的行为就是call one’s shots。后来，call the shots也有了“做决定”“发号司令”的意思。
