CCTV9英语新闻：90% of buildings in village at epicenter reduced to shambles

 Longtoushan Village is located at the epicenter of the earthquake. It’s 350 kilometers northeast of Yunnan’s capital city Kunming. The powerful earthquake reduced 90 percent of the buildings in the village to shambles 1, in just 15 seconds. So far about 70 people were pulled from the rubble 2, and 30 have survived.

This is what it looks like when a 6.5-magnitude earthquake strikes your home. In this village at the epicenter, many residents were buried by rubble with no time to escape. And here, a two-story house made of mud and bricks collapsed 4 completely with about 40 migrant workers inside. None survived.



It’s been mostly rainy in the quake region...and many villagers are still traumatized by the suddenness of the disaster.



"I was on the mountain at that time. It was safe there. We were collecting peppers in the tree. My daughter said, "Let’s jump!" I said we couldn’t. There were rocks falling down," said a local resident.



Rescue workers have been fully 5 mobilized. This team from the provincial 6 armed police are using life detectors 7 to search for signs of life. Here in the rubble of Yuan Hua’s family home, Yuan’s 70-year-old mother was found dead in the rubble.



"It’s around there, that location," Yuan said.



This street is the busiest marketplace in this ancient village. This woman’s boyfriend was buried here when they were shopping.



"He was talking to us just half an hour ago. But now we don’t hear anything. We’ve dug 3 meters deep, but there’s no sign of him. The only thing we can do now is to break the roof and go down to find him," said a soldier Li Rongjun.



But elsewhere, some encouraging news... This man was taken out of the shambles, after being trapped inside for 19 hours.



"His head was buried by a precast slab 8, and his lower body by bricks. He was seriously injured. But he’s in stable condition in the hospital now," said political commissar of Yunnan Reserve Forces Liu Zhaojun.



So far over 2,000 people from police, armed forces, hospitals and fire departments are participating in relief efforts. The road leading to the village is being cleared, and more support is on the way.
