LA PAZ, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- Bolivia is striving for technological 1 development to propel the nation in the 21st century, Vice 2 President Alvaro Garcia Linera said Tuesday.
The "21st century Bolivia" will be built on the "technological foundation" of telecommunications development, the industrialization of natural resources, and mass transit," Garcia said at an event held for a cable car project, which is supposed to be the world's longest when completed.
The 234 million-dollar cable car contract was signed in 2012. According to construction plans, the project, which entails 3 building three lines, will have 427 cars and can transport an average of 20,000 passengers per hour between the mountainous capital of La Paz and the suburb of El Alto, with 11 stations along the 36-km route. It is expected to begin operating by March.
Garcia said that the government of President Evo Morales has promoted "democratic modernization 4" through such projects, including the recent launch of the country's 300 million-dollar Tupac Katari satellite, with the help of the Great Wall Industry Corporation of China.
"We are laying the technological foundation for the Bolivia of the 21st century," Garcia said.
