UNITED NATIONS, April 24 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday welcomed the peaceful general elections held Sunday in Paraguay, saying that the United Nations is ready to work with the new elected authorities and the people of the South American country.
"The secretary-general welcomes the large turnout and the peaceful manner in which the general elections of 21 April in Paraguay were conducted, confirming the democratic commitment of its people," said a statement issued here by Ban's spokesman.
"The United Nations reiterates 1 its readiness to work with the new elected authorities and the people of Paraguay," said the statement.
Millionaire businessman Horacio Cartes has won Sunday's Paraguayan presidential elections, bringing the once long-ruling Colorado Party to power again since it was defeated in 2008 after more than six decades in power.
Paraguay's electoral body said shortly after polls closed Sunday that between 52 percent and 55 percent of the country's nearly 3.5 million eligible 2 voters participated in the elections.
Under the constitution, the president, also the head of the government, is elected by popular vote with a five-year term. Candidates win by simple majority in the one-round voting.
