 　　Still averted 1 from her, the young man made a sign of affirmation.

　　年轻人仍然别开身子，却做了个动作，表示肯定。
　　"For the sake of the pueblo 2–to make the rain come and the corn grow. And to please Pookong and Jesus. And then to show that I can bear pain without crying out. Yes," and his voice suddenly took on a new resonance 3, he turned with a proud squaring of the shoulders, a proud, defiant 4 lifting of the chin "to show that I'm a man … Oh!"
　　“为了村子，为了求雨，为了庄稼生长，为了讨菩公和耶稣的欢喜，也为了表现我能够忍受痛苦，不哭不叫，我想挨鞭子。”他的声音突然换了一种新的共鸣，一挺胸脯，骄傲地、挑战地扬起了下巴，“为了表现我是个男子汉……啊！”
　　He gave a gasp 5 and was silent, gaping 6.
　　他倒抽了一口气，张着嘴，不说话了：
　　He had seen, for the first time in his life, the face of a girl whose cheeks were not the colour of chocolate or dogskin, whose hair was auburn and permanently 7 waved, and whose expression (amazing novelty!) was one of benevolent 8 interest.
　　他是平生第一次看见这样一个姑娘，面庞并非巧克力色或狗皮色；头发红褐色，永远髦曲；脸上表现了温厚的关怀（奇怪得惊人！）。
　　Lenina was smiling at him; such a nice-looking boy, she was thinking, and a really beautiful body.
　　列宁娜对他笑着。多么好看的小伙子，她在想，真正漂亮的身材。
　　The blood rushed up into the young man's face; he dropped his eyes, raised them again for a moment only to find her still smiling at him, and was so much overcome that he had to turn away and pretend to be looking very hard at something on the other side of the square.
　　血涌上了小伙子的脸，他低下头，好一会才抬了起来，却发现她还在对他笑。他太激动了，只好掉开了头，假装专心望着广场对面的什么东西。
　　Bernard's questions made a diversion.
　　伯纳提出的几个问题岔开了他的注意。
　　Who? How? When? From where?
　　他问他是什么人？从哪儿来的？为什么来的？什么时候来的？
　　Keeping his eyes fixed 9 on Bernard's face (for so passionately 10 did he long to see Lenina smiling that he simply dared not look at her),
　　青年把眼睛盯在伯纳脸上（他急于想看那姑娘的微笑，却简直不敢看她），
　　the young man tried to explain himself.
　　对自己的情况做了解释。
　　Linda and he–Linda was his mother (the word made Lenina look uncomfortable)–were strangers in the Reservation.
　　在保留地琳妲（他妈妈，列宁娜一听妈妈两字就不好意思了）和他都是外来人。
　　Linda had come from the Other Place long ago, before he was born, with a man who was his father.
　　琳妲是很久以前跟一个男人从“那边”来的，那时他还没有出生。那男人就是他的父亲。
　　(Bernard pricked 11 up his ears.)
　　（伯纳尖起了耳朵。）
　　She had gone walking alone in those mountains over there to the North, had fallen down a steep place and hurt her head.
　　琳妲从那边的山里独自往北方走，摔到了一道悬崖下面，脑袋受了伤。
　　("Go on, go on," said Bernard excitedly.) Some hunters from Malpais had found her and brought her to the pueblo.
　　（“说吧，说吧，”伯纳激动地说。）几个从马尔佩斯去的猎人发现了她，把她带回了村子。
　　As for the man who was his father, Linda had never seen him again.
　　琳妲从此再也没有看见那个男人，他的父亲。
　　His name was Tomakin. (Yes, "Thomas" was the D.H.C.'s first name.)
　　那人的名字叫汤玛金（没有错，主任的名字就是汤玛士）。
　　He must have flown away, back to the Other Place, away without her–a bad, unkind, unnatural 12 man.
　　他一定是飞走了，没有带她就回到那另外的地方去了——那是个狠心的、不近人情的坏蛋。
　　"And so I was born in Malpais," he concluded. "In Malpais." And he shook his head.
　　“因此我就在马尔佩斯出生了，”他结束了他的话，“在马尔佩斯出生了。”他摇了摇头。
　　The squalor of that little house on the outskirts 13 of the pueblo!
　　村庄附近那小屋可真肮脏！
　　A space of dust and rubbish separated it from the village.
　　一片满是灰沙和垃圾的空地把这小屋跟村子分了开来。
　　Two famine-stricken dogs were nosing obscenely in the garbage at its door.
　　两条饥饿的狗在小屋门前的垃圾里不知羞耻地嗅着。
　　Inside, when they entered, the twilight 14 stank 15 and was loud with flies.
　　他们走进屋里，昏暗里臭烘烘的，苍蝇的嗡嗡声很大。
　　"Linda!" the young man called.
　　“琳妲。”年轻人叫道。
　　From the inner room a rather hoarse 16 female voice said, "Coming."
　　“来了。”一个很嘶哑的女声回答。
　　They waited. In bowls on the floor were the remains 17 of a meal, perhaps of several meals.
　　他们等着。地上的几个碗里有吃剩的饭，说不定已是好几顿剩下的了。
　　The door opened.
　　门开了。
　　A very stout 18 blonde squaw stepped across the threshold and stood looking at the strangers staring incredulously, her mouth open.
　　一个非常肥壮的金发白肤的印第安女人跨进了门槛，大张着嘴站在那儿，呆望着两个生客，不敢相信。
　　Lenina noticed with disgust that two of the front teeth were missing. And the colour of the ones that remained … She shuddered 19.
　　列宁娜厌恶地注意到，她已掉了两颗门牙，还没有掉的那些牙的颜色也…… 她起了鸡皮疙瘩。
