CARACAS, April 16 (Xinhua) -- Venezuelan president-elect Nicolas Maduro said Tuesday that his government has defeated an alleged 1 coup 2 staged by the right wing by creating violence, while opposition 3 leader Henrique Capriles accused the government of provoking the violence.

"Today I declare that the coup was defeated, by the people and the armed forces," Maduro said shortly before inaugurating a comprehensive diagnostic center in the parish of Caucaguita in the state of Miranda.
Maduro said that the violence was stirred up by the right wing and Capriles to challenge the results of Sunday's election.
He urged Capriles to take responsibility and noted 4 that the plot was funded by the Department of State of the United States.
"We condemn 5 all forms of violence and their perpetrators," he said.
The violent protests following Sunday's presidential election in Venezuela have so far left seven people dead and 61 others injured, Venezuelan General Attorney Luisa Ortega said on Tuesday.
At least 135 Venezuelans have been arrested for violent attacks, she said, adding they will be tried in court.
Maduro said the right wing masterminded a plot to attack institutions of the ruling United Socialist 6 Party of Venezuela, comprehensive diagnostic centers, and urban developments of the Great Mission Housing Venezuela in the country.
He said that the revolutionaries will not yield to the blackmail 7 of violence, intolerance and hatred 8.
"We call for peace, to the people that could hear me, in the most remote areas, neighborhoods, communities, universities: peace, absolute serenity 9, not ... provocations 11. The country will continue its course," he added.
Maduro has blamed "fascist 12 mobs" for the violence and accused the opposition of fermenting 13 a coup, noting he would not allow the opposition to go ahead with a planned protest march on Wednesday through the streets of Caracas.
"You are not going to the center of Caracas to fill it with death and blood," he warned in a nationally televised statement while calling on his own supporters to take to the streets.
Meanwhile, Capriles urged his supporters to cancel the protest before the National Electoral Council (CNE) in Caracas on Wednesday, to avoid more violence "provoked by the government."
"We will not mobilize tomorrow (Wednesday) as the government prepared some infiltrators to provoke violence in the march," the opposition leader told local and foreign reporters at a press conference, calling on his supporters to be united and avoid falling into the government's provocation 10.
He said his team is seeking "a solution to the political crisis ... this is the time to control emotions, we must act with reason," he said.
Capriles alleged that there are sectors 14 that "seek to take a shortcut 15 and incite 16 violence," stressing the opposition will continue to fight unjustness.
"We will continue this fight until the end. Struggles for just causes have no expiration 17 date," he said.
"I demand the government stop the persecution 18 of people who are asking for the vote count," Capriles said, requesting Maduro to stop threatening Venezuelan people with the alleged excuse of a "coup."
Venezuela held presidential elections Sunday after former president Hugo Chavez died of cancer in March.
Protests erupted in parts of Caracas and other Venezuelan cities on Monday after Maduro was declared winner of the elections. As Maduro only held a narrow lead, the opposition rejected the results and demanded a vote recount.
According to official figures, Maduro obtained 50.75 percent of the votes, while Capriles garnered 19 48.97 percent.
Capriles, the opposition candidate of the right-wing coalition 20 Democratic Unity 21 Roundtable (MUD), has contested the results and claimed Maduro's victory is illegitimate.
CNE President Tibisay Lucena rejected Capriles' accusations 22 of electoral fraud Monday night and urged him to register his complaint with the courts.
