PART 1 THREE - A YOUNG WOMAN AT THORNFIELD

CHAPTER 2 NINE

Mr. Rochester's Secrets 3

"Mr. Rochester! Wake 4 up! Wake up!" I screamed 5, throwing water on the bed to put out the fire. Not until 6 the fire was 7 almost 8 out did 9 he wake up. He was surprised 10 to see that he was wet.

"Jane, what is going 11 on? Is there a [-----1-----] in this house?"he said 12.

"No, sir,"I answered, "there's been a fire!"

"Jane Eyre, is it you and your magic 13?"he asked. "Did you put a [-----2-----] on me again? Did you want to [-----3-----] me this time?"

I did not answer this. "Sir, please get up. Someone 14 has tried to kill 15 you!" I told him about the strange 16 sounds I had 17 heard outside my room and about the fire. He turned very pale 18, and thought 19 for a few 20 moments.

"Do you want to talk to Mrs. Fairfax, or the other servants 21, sir?" I asked.

"No, we shouldn't wake them. Wait here for a moment. I'm going up to the top floor. I'll be back soon."

I waited in his room for what seemed 22 like a very long time. When he came 23 back, be looked worried 24.

"Jane, did you see anything when you opened your bedroom door?" he asked, looking carefully 25 at me.

"No sir."

"But you heard a strange laugh?"

"Yes, I've heard it before. It was like a strange laugh I heard once. I think it is Grace 26 Poole, she laughs like that."

"Well, perhaps 27 it was Grace Poole who started this fire. I must think about what to do. I'm glad you're the only person 28 who knows about this. Don't tell anyone 29! Now, go back to your room."
