不知大家参加过这样的派对没有：刚开始大伙儿谁也不漏声色，派对上是鸦雀无声，气氛颇为沉闷，搞得这次派对的邀请者很是尴尬。可是后来，只要有一个人开了头，展示了自己的看家本事，那么大伙儿就凑起热闹来了，争先恐后地要展示自己的绝活。好，今天Juliet就教您一招说“开始”——开个头。请接招啦！
抛招：It looks like a dull party with everybody just sitting there. But Dick started the ball rolling by telling a couple of funny jokes. And then Jack 1 brought out his guitar and sang some folk songs. People started singing along and we had a good time after all.
聚会一开始，大家都坐在那里，看起来很沉闷。后来Dick讲了几个挺滑稽的笑话，总算开了个头。然后，Jakc把他的吉它拿了出来，还唱了几首民谣。大家也跟着一起唱起来，我们终究还是玩得很愉快的。
接招：“Start the ball rolling”的英文解释为“make a beginning of something or begin an activity or a conversation”。中文意思就是“开个头”（特别指在会议上可是谈话），开始一个活动。用之来表示这个意思也是很形象的，从字面意思来看，它的意思是“让球滚动起来”，这就很形象地引申为“开个头”的意思。用之表示“通过什么方式开个头”“以什么事件开个头”，我们则在“rolling”这个单词的后面加上表方式的介词“by”，即：start the ball rolling by something (or by doing something )。我们还可以用动词get和set来替换片语中的动词start，即：get the ball rolling，set the ball rolling。
我们再通过不同情境下的例句来熟悉这个片语的意思以及用法。
在商务职场业务洽谈上，我们都希望用最优惠的价格和最实惠的的东西跟别人打开门路，以便业务开展得红火起来。下面我们就来“商务洽谈”上的例子：
1. All right, we agree to meet you halfway 2 in order to start the ball rolling.
好吧，为了开始做生意，我们同意让一步。
2. Just to comply, we're ready to reduce the price by 5 percent. I hope this concession 3 of ours will get the ball rolling.
好吧，依从你们的意见，我们准备削减5%的价格，希望我们这次让步能打开局面。
在会议上我们也可以看到冷场的局面：刚开始一个人都不愿意说出自己的意见或建议，但是只要有一个人开了头，后面就不得了了，主持人都招架不住了。我们来看下面的在会议上的例句：
1. The old men having set the ball rolling, the others began to throw in their suggestions.
老头儿们开了头，别人都纷纷出起主意来了。
2. No one seems inclined to ask a question, will you set the ball rolling, Tom?
似乎没人想要提出问题，Tom，你能开个头吗？
3. Let's get the ball rolling. I am anxious to knock off from work on time.
让我们开始吧。我急着准时下班。
