     The first electronic digital computer was completed in 1946 at the
University of Pennsylvania. The first-generation computers were
supplanted 1 by the transistorized computers of the late 50s and early
60s. The second-generation machines that could perform a million
operations per second were replaced by the third-generation
integrated-circuit machines of the mid-60s and 70s. The 80s has been
characterized by the development of the microprocessors 2 and the
evolution of increasingly smaller but powerful minicomputers,
microcomputers 3, and personal computers.
