[00:01.49]I Want! I Do! I Get!

[00:04.34]There's a great song out there by Jimmy Cliff,

[00:08.16]one of reggae's top artists,

[00:10.25]that in six words summarizes just how you succeed in life:

[00:14.29]I want! I do! I get!

[00:17.90] These six words are a very powerful way

[00:20.86]of connecting what you want with what you will achieve.

[00:24.24]First comes wanting something—a better life for yourself,

[00:28.18]your family, more money, a better job,

[00:31.35]whatever it is you dream about and long for.

[00:34.53]You desire it, you dream about it,

[00:37.09] you daydream 1 about it, you yearn 2 for it.

[00:40.81]But that's not enough.

[00:42.88]Next and this the part too many people forget about—comes the doing.

[00:48.13]All of the wanting in the world

[00:49.99]is not going to move you one inch closer to what you want: you have to do.

[00:55.24]You have to find a better job, change jobs, take risks, write software,

[01:01.25] try new things, stop doing old things, go to college, work, act, do.

[01:08.69] The doing is the absolutely indispensable connection

[01:12.41]between what you want and what you get.

[01:15.04]Finally, if you keep doing what needs to be done,

[01:18.43]if you keep adjusting what you do to move you closer to what you want, you get.

[01:23.79] Maybe not easily, maybe not as quickly as movies and television portray 3,

[01:29.37]but it will come.

[01:31.33]One final philosophical 4 note about these six words:

[01:35.05]notice that "I" is three of them?

[01:38.00]Not what others want, not what others say you are "supposed" or "should" do.

[01:43.91]What's more, no one is going to do it for you.

[01:47.66] You are the key to making these six words work.
