The Bay area rapid transit system was shutdown at midnight friday and now evening communters are flooding buses and ferries and jaming the free ways to get out of Sanfrancisco.Both sides say they were near agreement on wages, benefits and pensions but negotiations 4 broke down on thirsday over worke rules.Management says it needs to changes to those rules to modernize 5 the barge 6 system.The uniob says it is prepared to surmit the work rules dispute to arbitritor,but management declined that offer. This is a second barge strike this year after workers walked off jobs for 4 days in July.Richard Ganzalas, NPR News,Sanfrancisco. 
President Obama formally announced his choice to place Jay Atano as head of the department of Homeland securtiy.The president is speaking in the White House rose garden today saying his nomination 7 of Jay Johnson to the post brings someone with deep understanding of the threats and chanllenges the US faces.

Former House speaker Tom Forly has died.Forly's wife confirming the Washington state Democrat,died of complications following a stroke.Forly served more than 30 years in the house including more than 5 a speaker before losing the seat in the so-called republican revolution of 1994 when he became the first speaker since the civil war not to win the election in his home district.Forly also served 4 years as ambassdor to Japan during the Clinton administration. Tom Forly was 84 years old.
Same sex couples in New jersy will be able to get married beginning next week. New jersy's highest court today denied the state's request to put same sex marriage on hold one appeal considered.NPR's Joe Rose explains.
A state judge ruled the New jersy civil union law violates the civil rights of same sex couples and ordered the state to recognize same sex marriages beginning next week.The administration of governor Kris Crisdy a popular republican who may run presiden in 2016 appealed that ruling to state supreme court which agree to take the case,but the court denied the administration's request to stay the lower court's ruling in the meantime.That's means same sex marriages will likely begin across the garden state just after midnight on monday morning.Governor Crisdy argued that the New Jersy voters not courts or law makers 18 should decide whether to allow same sex marriage.The state supreme court will hear the administration's appeal in Jan.Rose NPR News.
