Three Indonesian fishermen will face court in Perth today, over last month's Christmas Island boat tragedy that killed 50 asylum 1 seekers. Those people have been charged with people smuggling 2. The Federal Government will upgrade Christmas Island's radar 3 surveillance system, after a Customs inquiry 4 into the tragedy.
Two car bombs have exploded in the Iraqi city of Karbala, killing 5 at least 18 people. The first bomb went off in a car park filled with buses carrying pilgrims to the city. The second blast again targeted at pilgrims in the south of the city.
A report by al-Jazeera that claims Palestinian leaders offered Israel large concessions 6 during peace talks has sparked angry protests. Demonstrators attacked the TV network's West Bank headquarters, smashing windows and spraying graffiti on the building. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has condemned 7 the report, describing it as shameful 8.
The Navy has sent two Seahawk helicopters to Victoria to help out with the state's flood emergency. They will be used to ferry emergency crews around flood-affected areas and deliver supplies to communities isolated 9 by the floods. The helicopters had earlier been used during the Queensland floods.
The death toll 10 from the recent flooding in Queensland has climbed to 22. Remains 11 found in the Lockyer and Brisbane valleys over the weekend have been confirmed as human. So far, 35 people have died in flood related incidents in Queensland since the end of November.
