[01:43.40]She entered every race in high school,
[01:46.46]and in every race she came in last.
[01:49.32]Everyone thought she should stop competing!
[01:52.70]However, one day she came in second to last.
[01:56.74]Later she won a race.
[01:59.16]From then on,
[02:00.48]Wilma won every race that she entered.
[02:03.64]Wilma went to Tennessee State University,
[02:06.91]where she met a coach named Ed Temple.
[02:10.10]The coach believed that she had a great talent.
[02:13.37]He trained her so well that she could go to the Olympic Games.
[02:17.96]There she competed against the greatest woman runner of the day,
[02:22.55]a German girl named Jutta Heine.
[02:25.63]Nobody had ever beaten Jutta.
[02:28.57]But in the 100-meter and 200-meter dash, Wilma won.
[02:34.48]Finally came the 400-meter relay 7.
[02:38.52]The first two runners on Wilma’s team
[02:41.31]made perfect handoffs with the stick.
[02:43.77]But when the third runner handed the stick to Wilma,
[02:47.00]she dropped it,
[02:48.31]and Wilma saw Jutta taking off down the track.
[02:51.37]It was impossible for anyone to catch this fast girl,
[02:56.03]but Wilma did just that!
