“在行、有一手”
棒球有“美国国球”之称。或许，一本“棒球百科全书”比一本简单的字典更能反映美国文化。据《迪克逊新棒球词典》（Paul Dickson所著）记载，俚语“have on the ball”源于棒球运动，指的是“某人有一手，做某事很在行”。 “Have on the ball”最早出现于20世纪初，用来形容棒球手出手不凡，击球、投球、守球以及跑垒和偷垒样样精通，赛场上能完全控制局势，令对手“望球生畏”。当然，由“have on the ball”，我们还可衍生出一系列短语：have something on the ball（有些能耐）；have nothing on the ball（不中用）；have much on the ball（很有一手，很能干）。 另外，“on the ball”还可和其它动词如stay、keep和be连用，依据具体语境表示“提防”、“机灵”、“勤奋”或“能干”…… 看几个例句： He will do well in that work because he has a lot on the ball.（他很有一手，肯定能做好这件事。）
As a politician, you must be on the ball in the election.（你是一名政治家，必须在选举中时刻警惕。）
Her typing is on the ball.（她打字顶呱呱。）
