The Chinese icebreaker Xue Long, or Snow Dragon, was just 6.1 nautical 3 miles away from the trapped ship, but now it’s stuck itself in an Antarctica ice floe 4. The Chinese crew is counting on a ship from Australia, the Aurora 5 Australis, to arrive on Sunday to break it out.
The icebreaker was battling the planet’s coldest environment in trying to reach the stranded 6 Russian ship MV Akademik Shokalskiy. The over 50 researchers, crew and tourists on board remained in good condition despite being at a frozen standstill since Monday.
Xue Long is in close communication with the stalled Russian ship, and will send helicopters to rescue people on-board if conditions endanger the Russian crew's safety.
