   1. sock away 存钱


  中国人常说把钱藏在床的褥子底下,那么英文里怎么说的呢?英文里说把钱藏在袜子里。
  大约八十年前,许多人不信任银行,可是又要把钱放在一个妥当的地方。不知道是谁想出来的,把藏钱说成是把钱藏在袜子里,于是就产生了我们今天讲的这个习惯用语:sock away。
  换句话说sock away就是把钱藏在安全的地方,以备日后取用的意思。当年这个安全的地方就是袜子里头。
  现在让我们来看看这个习惯用语是怎么用的。假定说John和他的妻子有小宝贝女儿只有一岁。可是现在这对夫妇就开始计划如何存钱好让他的女儿日后上大学。John说:
  例句-1: It costs 1 a lot these days to send children to college 2, so we are going 3 to sock away some money every month to make sure she starts life 4 with a good education 5.
  现在送小孩上大学可真得花大笔钱;我们得每个月存些钱好让她能够在涉生出世之前先受到良好的教育。
  2. sock in (因气候关系)关闭(机场)
  这里的sock只是 指wind sock。Wind sock是我们在飞机场常见的那种指示风向的所谓风向袋。风向袋很轻,一头开口,一头系在杆子上,只要有风它就会迎风飘起,指示风吹的方向。那么sock in又是怎么回事呢?那是在二战期间,当时的机场,特别是军用机场往往靠风向袋来决定这个机场是否关闭。要是天公不做美,豪雨连连,暴风骤雨的话,那么这 个风向袋是吹不起来的。在这种情况下,这个机场只好sock in;所以sock in就是关闭机场,知道天气转好再重新开放的意思。
  我们就举个例子来看看这个习惯用语是怎么用的。Sam原定今天早上要搭飞机去纽约开会,可是早上起来往窗外一看。老天呀,大雪纷飞,于是他不由得感到担心起来。Sam跟他的妻子说:
  例句-2: Honey 6, the snow is beginning 7 to come down a lot faster. I am afraid it will sock in the airport and I won't be able 8 to fly up to New York for that business 9 meeting 10.
  亲爱的,雪开始下得越来越猛了。我怕机场会关闭;我不能飞到纽约去开会了。
  3. knock 11 your socks off 12 令人兴奋不已的好事
  Knock是敲或打 的意思。Knock your socks off的意思相当于中国的成语“叹为观止”。按字面来解释也就是,当你看到一件事感到十分惊讶,其震撼力把你的袜子都从腿上震了下来。举例来说,Tom昨 天晚上看了一场电影,他觉得简直是太好了。他不但自己还要再去看一遍,而且还要把女朋友也带去一块儿观赏。Tom对女朋友说:
  例 句-3: I want to tell you that you will love this picture. I promise 13 you it will knock your socks off, honey. It's the best thing I have seen 14 in a long time.
  你一定会喜欢这部电影。我保证它一定会让你叹为观止。这是我好久以来看到的最好的一部电影。
