Until he does so, he labors 1 under a curse. He writes not of love but of lust 2, of defeats in which nobody loses anything of value, of victories without hope and, worst of all, without pity or compassion 3.

It is easy enough to say that man is immortal 5 simply because he will endure:

1 labors

3 compassion
n.同情，怜悯
- He could not help having compassion for the poor creature.他情不自禁地怜悯起那个可怜的人来。
- Her heart was filled with compassion for the motherless children.她对于没有母亲的孩子们充满了怜悯心。
5 immortal
adj.不朽的；永生的，不死的；神的
- The wild cocoa tree is effectively immortal.野生可可树实际上是不会死的。
- The heroes of the people are immortal!人民英雄永垂不朽！
