Tom Wagner was left on board from Lafayette to Houston on Saturday. He fell asleep during the journey, and was not noticed by staff or fellow passengers when the plane touched down in Texas.

"I woke up and the lights were out. I was like, what's going on?" Mr Wagner told ABC station. "I thought maybe it was a layover, still on the same plane."

He then realised that everyone else has disembarked and sought help from his partner.

"I called my girlfriend, and she thought I was crazy,” he said. “I said, 'Debbie I'm locked on the plane.I'm telling you the truth; you better go somewhere and get me off this plane.'"

Mr Wagner’s girlfriend alerted 1 the airline, and he was released 2 by staff around half an hour later. He missed his connecting flight to California.ExpressJet issued a statement confirming that the incident had taken place.

"An ExpressJet passenger remained on board flight 4245, after all passengers had deplaned.ExpressJet is investigating to determine how this occurred. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this caused for the passenger.” it said.

The airline put Mr Wagner up in a hotel room for the night, gave him a free washbag containing toothpaste and a toothbrush, and a $250 voucher 3 so he could reach his final destination.
