The road to recovery in Nepal will undoubtedly be a long one. But even now, amidst the rubble, acts of kindness are bringing hope to thousands, as people from the world over join hands to help Nepal back on its feet.
One hour's drive from Kathmandu, in the mountains, an orphanage lies in ruins. This is where a group of Chinese volunteers have been working for the past month. The group's leader, Guo Yu, said she felt indebted to the people of Nepal.
"I was injured during a car accident in July last year when I was traveling here. Many people helped me. I am grateful to the Nepalese people," Guo said.
And when disaster struck, she was moved by another act of generosity.
"I was traveling here when the quake hit last month. A family shared their tent with me, gave me food and water," Guo said.
The experience made Guo determined to give back. She rallied friends who ran schools, businesses or were simply in Nepal at the time.
They began raising money by selling handicrafts they had made themselves. Days into their new endeavor, they had enough money for their first batch of gifts.
Children at the orphanage were delighted to receive new clothes, shoes and other supplies.
"These are their names. We stitched their names on clothes and trousers so they can easily differentiate them," said Yu Di, a Chinese volunteer.
Locals rewarded them with songs of gratitude, as children raced to try some of the new sports equipment.
"They've been living without the care of their parents, but that hasn't affected how they learn to respond to kindness in the world. In their minds, this is a little help from China," Guo said.
Guo promised the children she would be back for Children's Day, equipped with a camera this time, to capture their smiles and the joy of her experience.
