　　Bernard dashed to meet them. He waved his arms; and it was action, he was doing something.

　　伯纳冲上去迎接他们，向他们招手。他毕竟在行动，在做着什么。
　　He shouted "Help!" several times, more and more loudly so as to give himself the illusion of helping 1. Help! Help! HELP!
　　他连叫了几声，“救命！救命！”一声比一声高，他有一种自己在帮忙的幻觉，救命！救命！救命！
　　The policemen pushed him out of the way and got on with their work.
　　警察把他推到了一边，自己去执行任务。
　　Three men with spraying machines buckled 2 to their shoulders pumped thick clouds of soma vapour into the air.
　　三个肩上扛着喷雾器的警察向空中喷出了浓浓的唆麻气；
　　Two more were busy round the portable Synthetic 3 Music Box.
　　另外两个则在手提合成音箱前忙碌。
　　Carrying water pistols charged with a powerful anesthetic 4, four others had pushed their way into the crowd and were methodically laying out,
　　还有四个警察冲进了人群，扛着装满强麻醉剂的水枪，
　　squirt by squirt, the more ferocious 5 of the fighters.
　　对打得难解难分的人一股一股很技巧地喷射着。
　　"Quick, quick!" yelled Bernard. "They'll be killed if you don't hurry. They'll … Oh!"
　　“快！快！，”伯纳大叫，“再不快点他们就要给杀死了。要给……哦！”
　　Annoyed by his chatter 6, one of the policemen had given him a shot from his water pistol.
　　他那叽叽喳喳惹恼了一个警察，对准他射了一麻醉枪。
　　Bernard stood for a second or two wambling unsteadily on legs that seemed to have lost their bones, their tendons, their muscles,
　　伯纳的两腿似乎失去了骨头、筋腿和肉，他只摇晃了一两秒钟，便垮到了地上，瘫痪了。
　　to have become mere 7 sticks of jelly, and at last not even jelly-water: he tumbled in a heap on the floor.
　　变成了两根胶冻，后来甚至连胶冻也不是，而成了水。
　　Suddenly, from out of the Synthetic Music Box a Voice began to speak.
　　突然，一个声音在合成音乐音箱里说起话来。
　　The Voice of Reason, the Voice of Good Feeling.
　　那是理智的声音，善意的声音。
　　The sound-track roll was unwinding itself in Synthetic Anti-Riot Speech Number Two (Medium Strength).
　　合成音乐录音带正在播放二号（中等强度）反骚乱演说。
　　Straight from the depths of a non-existent heart,
　　是从一个不存在的心灵的深处直接发出来的，
　　"My friends, my friends!" said the Voice so pathetically, with a note of such infinitely 8 tender reproach that, behind their gas masks,
　　“朋友们，我的朋友们！”那声音带着无限温柔的责备，非常动情地说了起来，
　　even the policemen's eyes were momentarily dimmed with tears,
　　就连戴了防毒面具的警察的眼睛一时都泪眼模糊了：
　　what is the meaning of this? Why aren't you all being happy and good together?
　　你们这是什么意思？你们为什么不能大家幸福善良地在一起？
　　Happy and good,the Voice repeated. "At peace, at peace."
　　幸福善良，那声音重复道，“和平，和平。”
　　It trembled, sank into a whisper and momentarily expired.
　　那声音颤抖起来，降成了耳语，暂时消失了。
