　　LENINA felt herself entitled, after this day of queerness and horror, to a complete and absoluteholiday.

　　As soon as they got back to the rest-house, she swallowed six half-gramme tablets of soma,lay down on her bed, and within ten minutes had embarked 1 for lunar eternity 2. It would beeighteen hours at the least before she was in time again.

　　Bernard meanwhile lay pensive 3 and wide-eyed in the dark. It was long after midnight before hefell asleep. Long after midnight; but his insomnia 4 had not been fruitless; he had a plan.
　　这时伯纳却躺在黑暗里瞪着大眼想着心事，半夜后许久才入睡；可他的失眠并非没有收获。他拟定了一个计划。
　　Punctually, on the following morning, at ten o'clock, the green-uniformed octoroon stepped outof his helicopter.
　　第二天早上十点，穿绿制服的八分之一混血儿准时下了直升飞机。
　　Hemard was waiting for him among the agaves.
　　伯纳在龙舌兰丛中等着他。
　　"Miss Crowne's gone on soma-holiday," he explained.
　　“克朗小姐度唆麻假去了，”伯纳解释道，
　　Can hardly be back before five. Which leaves us seven hours.
　　看来五点以前是不会回来的。这就给了我们七个小时。
　　He could fly to Santa Fe, do all the business he had to do, and be in Malpais again long beforeshe woke up.

　　At ten thirty-four they landed on the roof of the Santa Fé Post Offiee; at ten thirty-sevenBernard had got through to the World Controller's Office in Whitehall; at ten thirty-seven hewas speaking to his fordship's fourth personal secretary; at ten forty-four he was repeating hisstory to the first secretary, and at ten forty-seven and a half it was the deep, resonant 5 voiceof Mustapha Mond himself that sounded in his ears.
　　十点三十四分他们在圣塔菲邮局房顶降落。十点三十七分伯纳已接通了白厅世界总统办公室。十点三十九分他已在跟总统福下的第四私人秘书谈话。十点四十四分他已在向第一秘书重复他的故事。到十点四十七分半钟他耳朵里已经震响着穆斯塔法蒙德本人的深沉宏亮的声音。
　　"I ventured to think," stammered 6 Bernard, "that your fordship might find the matter ofsufficient scientific interest …"

　　"Yes, I do find it of sufficient scientific interest," said the deep voice.

　　Bring these two individuals back to London with you.

　　Your fordship is aware that I shall need a special permit...

　　"The necessary orders," said Mustapha Mond, "are being sent to the Warden 7 of the Reservationat this moment."
　　“必要的命令，”穆斯塔法.蒙德说，“此刻正在向保留地总监发出。”
　　You will proceed at once to the Warden's Office.
　　你立即去总监官邸好了。
　　Good-morning, Mr. Marx.

　　There was silence.

　　Bernard hung up the receiver and hurried up to the roof.
