  in your corner

  on the ropes

Are you on the ropes? 在日常用语中,它指处于几近崩溃或失败的状态,例如:behind the apparent success the company was on the ropes。

  knockout

拳击比赛中的这一情境毫无疑问地影响到该词的比喻义,即“极具吸引力或极其印象深刻的人或事”,例如:he must have been a knockout when he was young。

  down (out) for the count

拳击手被对手击倒在拳台上,如果在十秒钟内不能站起就意味着失败出局,这种情境称为 a boxer is down for the count,英式英语称作 a boxer is out for the count。 He lay down in another room, finally out for the count。

  saved by the bell

或许你曾经处于“throw in the towel”的边缘,但你却被"saved by the bell"。

  below the belt

两个短语 a hit below the belt 和 a low blow 现在都可以泛指任何不正当或没有体育道德的行为,例如:To be honest, I have always known that the insult was rather below the belt.

  bob and weave

Production bobs and weaves from week to week.

  lead with one’s chin

在拳击比赛中,如果你 lead with your chin,那就等同于 stick your neck out,意为让自己处于不受保护的状态。 Just don't lead with your chin and rush in hoping for just one outcome: getting back together。

  throw in the towel

There are days when I feel like throwing in the towel, but I just keep hoping that things get better.

throw one’s hat into the ring

Everyone is throwing their hat in the ring because this is the last chance to do a deal.

  roll with the punches

Be realistic about your expectations and allow yourself to roll with the punches.

  rope-a-dope

今天,这个词汇有时用于政治圈里,例如美国《新共和》杂志1999年一篇文章中曾说到:“Clinton spent the next two years playing rope-a-dope with Newt Gingrich in hopes of living to fight another day.”
