[00:05.49]Lesson 93            1 Reading comprehension 1

[00:12.54]Read the text fast to get a general idea. Then think of a title for the passage.

[00:21.32]Experts believe that there are about 40,000 different types of job in the world.

[00:29.78]Choosing the right one is a difficult job in itself.

[00:34.93]"Finding a job"is not the same as"choosing a job".

[00:41.48]Many young people end up in a job to which they are not suited.

[00:47.44]"Chance"may play a more important part than"decision".

[00:53.19]So here are a few steps to help you think about jobs

[00:58.33]which you might enjoy doing after school or university.

[01:03.69]First,it is important to recognize what kind of person you are

[01:10.03]and which special qualities make you different from everyone else.

[01:16.80]To help youdo this, read the following questions and write down the answers"

[01:24.74]1 Make a list of 10 things which you like doing most.

[01:31.51]2 Which subjects do you like reading about in newspapers, magazinges and books?

[01:39.55]3 What have you been interested in for as long as you can remember?

[01:46.11]4 Think of a time when you were happiest. What were you doing?

[01:53.08]5 What makes you feel that you are doing well?

[01:58.94]6 What would you like to be admired for?

[02:05.39]You may have noticed something while you were doing this task.

[02:11.03]The point is that there is a difference between an interest and a skill.

[02:17.56]If you like art and enjoy looking at pictures, that is an interest.

[02:25.32]But if you can draw a horse that looks like a horse and not a big dog,

[02:32.19]that is a skill.

[02:35.95]The best job is one which uses your skill

[02:40.81]in doing something together with your interest in the subject.

[02:46.27]As well as this,it is an advantage if you believe that a particular job

[02:53.04]is worth doing in the world.

[02:57.11]To examine your skills and abilities still further,

[03:02.57]ask yourself this question:in the following three areas--skills with people,

[03:10.43]skills with information or skills with things which are your best skills?

[03:17.49]Note that it is not enough to say to yourself,

[03:22.45]"I enjoy working with people",for that is part of everyone's human nature.

[03:28.80]It is,however, important to examine the relationship with other people

[03:35.28]that brings you the greatest satisfaction.

[03:39.35]For example, you might be good at persuading,

[03:44.60]directing,interviewing,listening,teaching or informing.

[03:51.47]After examining your skills, the next step is research.

[03:58.24]To find out as much as possible about different kinds of work,

[04:04.30]go to the library and read books, magazines and newspapers.

[04:10.96]Ask your friends about the work they do.

[04:15.92]If you are interested in banking 2,

[04:20.18]it is better to talk to a bank clerk of twenty-four,

[04:26.14]rather than a bank manager of sixty-four.

[04:30.58]So do not rely 3 on your parents'friends for information.

[04:36.24]A younger person will be able to describe a normal day at work,

[04:42.41]and tell you about the interesting or boring things when you first start work.

[04:48.97]Finally,trust your own ideas and your own thinking!

[04:55.03]It is your own life,so find something that you enjoy doing.

[05:01.27]Lesson 94

[05:10.65]1 Reading comprehension

[05:15.38]Read the letters and the replies to answer these questions.

[05:21.44]1 What are the two problems?

[05:26.16]2 What is Abby's advice in each reply?

[05:32.02]Letter 1

[05:35.67]Dear Abby,I want to ask you for your advice.

[05:41.92]When I leave school,I want to be an engineer.

[05:46.75]For years I have been interested in engineering 4.

[05:52.18]I have made tools at home and have written articles for magazinges.

[05:58.95]My father says that engineering is not a suitable 5 subject for study.

[06:05.79]He wants me to study geography.

[06:09.55]However,I am not interested in this subject at all

[06:14.73]I tried to read books on it,but I was so bored.

[06:20.68]What should I do?I respect my fater's judgement and experience,

[06:27.63]but I don't think he understands me.Best wishes,May

[06:34.19]Letter 2

[06:37.74]Dear May,I am sorry that you have a disagreement 6 with your father.

[06:43.91]Personally,I think it is important to follow your interests and your abilities,

[06:50.67]and it sounds as though you have plenty of both of these already.

[06:56.73]Speak to your father and tell him that you are already doing well

[07:02.61]in the subject of your choice.

[07:06.27]If you like, remind him that many women have chosen to work in fields

[07:12.82]that were not used to accepting women.

[07:17.68]You can point out that Florence Nightingale opened up nursing 7

[07:23.25]and that Madame 8 Curie opened up sciences to women.

[07:28.42]Ask your father to speak to your teachers

[07:32.55]and find out how good you already are at your chosen subject.

[07:38.11]Trust yourself, trust your own thinking and your choice of subject.

[07:44.77]Best wishes, Abby

[07:48.32]Letter 3

[07:51.17]Dear Abby,I have got some wonderful news to tell you.

[07:56.94]I have been offered a scholarship 9 at a university in Australia

[08:02.30]for my further education.

[08:05.96]One hundred and twnty-five students took exams for it,

[08:11.60]and I was one of the five to be chosen.

[08:15.75]However,my parents are trying to prevent me from going.

[08:21.63]They say that it is too far away,

[08:25.89]that they will not see me for a whole year and that I shall be lonely.

[08:31.74]They are advising me to study in the capital instead.

[08:36.49]Then I will be able to continue living at home.

[08:40.75]How can I persuade them that I shall be all right?

[08:45.32]Best wishes,Joan

[08:48.85]Letter 4

[08:51.59]Dear Joan,Congratulations on your good news!

[08:57.47]You must have done well to have achieved this success.

[09:02.51]I think it is important to understand the relations between parents and their children.

[09:09.07]They spend time, energy and money in bringing up children

[09:14.71]and providing them with what they need.

[09:18.58]Then,as with young birds, the time comes for the young to leave.

[09:24.64]As we say,the day must come when the young are"grown and flown".

[09:30.88]Although parents may feel sad at this moment,

[09:35.74]it is not right that their feelings should decide the movements of their children.

[09:42.11]So,celebrate your success, and invite your parents to celebrate with you,

[09:49.56]however hard it may be for them.

[09:53.40]If you continue to be excited about your future,

[09:58.26]you may come to educate your parents in the same way.
