危言耸听者总爱吓唬人说：机器人会抢人们的饭碗。其实，它们能成为我们必不可少的好帮手，帮我们从机械而无聊的工作中解脱出来，去做更有意思的事情。罗德尼·布鲁克斯指出，随着适龄工作的成年人数量的下降，以及退休人员数量的膨胀，机器人可以发挥相当重要的作用。他介绍了一个叫巴克斯特（Baxter）的机器人。这个机器人的“眼睛”能动，而且它的“手”可以感知，这样它就能在上了年纪的人群身边工作——学会如何帮他们打理生活。
