China's Foreign Ministry has commented on the debate in the Hong Kong SAR over the constitutional development plan. Spokesperson Lu Kang said at a briefing on Tuesday that the vote is a significant step in the region's long-term development.
"First, I want to emphasize that the things that have happened in the Hong Kong SAR are part of China's internal affairs. I want to re-emphasize that the vote on electoral reform in Hong Kong is an important event. We hope it will go successfully. It is conducive to Hong Kong's long-term development. At the moment, there are some who plan to interfere with the process using a series of undermining activities. This action does not conform with the basic interests of Hong Kong people," Lu said.
