Chapter 1 Three“Here we are, Madam.” The big black car stopped, and a police 2 officer 3 opened the back door.

“Thank you.” Helen sent back a smile at him as 4 she got 5 out. Another police officer opened the front door of her house. Inside 6 her house it was 7 quiet. Her daughter was reading 8. She put the book down. “Hello! Mammy! You are late. You said 9 you’ll be home by ten o’clock. I wanted to talk to you about my homework, remember?” Helen sat 10 down. “I’m sorry, Sara. I did 11 remember really. But I had 12 a very busy day. Anyway 13, I’m home now. What’s the problem 14?”

“It’s this book,” said Sara, “I have to write about it at school on Friday. But I don’t understand it.”

“Alright,” said Helen, “Bring the book into the kitchen and I’ll look at it while 15 you make me a cup of coffee.” They sat in the kitchen and talked for nearly 16 half an hour. Then Helen looked at her watch. “OK, Sara. That’s enough for now. It’s nearly midnight 17 and I must be up at six tomorrow. I’m going 18 to bed. Good night!” Alone 19 in her bedroom, she undressed and got into the big empty bed. She was very tired. She closed 20 her eyes. And in three minutes, she was asleep 21. The phone rang at 12:15 a.m. Helen groaned 23 and picked 24 it up. “Hello! What? Who? Tell me what time it is!” She ran 22 her hand through her hair and turned the light on. “Now? I don’t believe 25 it! Are you sure?” The voice 26 on the telephone explained 27 carefully 28. Helen groaned again and sat up. “I hope 29 it is serious 30. If it isn’t, somebody 31 is going to be in a big trouble 32. Yes! Alright! Send a car in fifteen minutes then and bring me some coffee. Goodbye!” She put the phone down and got out of the bed. Outside the window she could 33 hear a strong wind blowing.

Twenty minutes later 34, she was sitting in the back of her black big car, drinking a cup of coffee and talking to the chief 35 airport police on the car telephone. It was raining heavily 36.
