A large fire under a Manhattan bridge sent orange flames and plumes 1 of smoke over several New York City blocks. The blaze shut down service on the nation's second busiest commuter 2 rail service, creating a travel nightmare for dozens.
"And I'm really happy because I don't like Mondays in general, and this is really doing it."
The fire started around noon and it took crews more than two hours to get the flames under control. Metro 3 North train service resumed ahead of the evening rush hour, but that provided little comfort for some rail passengers.
"Penn Station last week, Grand Central this week, Path Trains next week, I don't know. I mean it's, people do have to get home, this place got me insane in two hours, and I've get out of here.”
This is just the latest in a string of problems for suburban 4 New York commuters. Last week, a storm left down trees on the tracks, bringing Long Island rail trains to a halt. And in August, a fire damaged a switching system, causing a week of service disruptions.
"It certainly tells a story that, you know that, the whole region is in need of infrastructure 5 development."
The cause of Monday's fire was not immediately known, but no injuries were reported.
