 The Federal Government is facing strong opposition 1 from the banks about plans to scrap 2 mortgage exit fees. Banks say they might charge higher interest rates in order to compensate 3 for the lost revenue if the Government goes ahead with the plans. Federal Treasurer 4 Wayne Swan says he won't allow banks to bring in new charges when it scraps 5 exit fees next year. The Shadow Treasurer Joe Hockey says the plan fails to deliver for families. 


 
New WikiLeaks documents show Australian intelligence agencies fear Australia could be drawn 6 into a nuclear war in the Middle East. The documents published in Fairfax newspapers are from Australian intelligence sources to the US embassy. They say Australia fears Israel might launch military strikes against Iran.
 
A fisherman has been rescued by two Black Hawk 7 helicopters off the coast of Queensland. The army choppers lifted the man from a tugboat 150 nautical 8 miles northeast of Bundaberg last night. He's said to have fallen ill while fishing. 
 
The rain has stopped in the Riverina district of southern New South Wales, but now the locusts 9 are back. Sports clubs in the towns of Howlong say they are struggling to run their regular competitions because of the locusts. 
 
And a proposed strike by maritime 10 workers could disrupt filming of Oprah Winfrey show at the Sydney Opera House tomorrow. Unions will meet this morning to decide whether they'll stop work. The workers are in charge of setting up an exclusion 11 zone around the site. They are threatening to strike over pay and working conditions.
