Authorities in Beijing issued the Chinese capital’s first “red” smog alert—the highest level. During the alert, between 7am today and noon on Thursday, schools are advised to shut, building sites and some factories will be closed and cars are banned from the streets on alternate date, depending on whether their number plates are odd or even numbers.
