(I didn’t want to be a father, so I wasn’t)这种情况直到丽萨八岁时,才有所好转。

Eating chicken became her little indulgence as she shuttled between two parents who were vegetarians 1 with a spiritual regard for natural foods. "We bought our groceries—our puntarella, quinoa, celeriac, carob-covered nuts—in yeasty-smelling stores where the women didn' t dye their hair," she later wrote about her time with her mother. "But we sometimes tasted foreign treats. A few times we bought a hot, seasoned chicken from a gourmet 2 shop with rows and rows of chickens turning on spits, and ate it in the car from the foil-lined paper bag with our fingers." Her father, whose dietary fixations came in fanatic 3 waves, was more fastidious about what he ate. She watched him spit out a mouthful of soup one day after learning that it contained butter. After loosening up a bit while at Apple, he was back to being a strict vegan. Even at a young age Lisa began to realize his diet obsessions 4 reflected a life philosophy, one in which asceticism 5 and minimalism could heighten subsequent sensations. "He believed that great harvests came from arid 6 sources, pleasure from restraint," she noted 7. "He knew the equations that most people didn' t know: Things led to their opposites." (Chapter20 A Regular Guy: Lisa

4. philosophy n.
因此,按字面原义讲,philosophy 是the love of wisdom(对智慧的热爱)的意思,而philosopher 则是a lover of wisdom(热爱智慧的人)。
源于希腊语philos‘loving’的英语组合词素phil(o)表示“爱好”或者“亲”,它出现在不少英语单词里,如philately(集邮),philobiblic(有爱书癖的),philanthropy(慈善),philander(玩弄女性),philology(语文学)等等。
源自希腊语词根sophos‘wise'的英语单词有sophism(诡辩),sophomore(大二学生),sophisticated(世故的)等。
