2014年美国中期选举在11月4日举行，共和党最终拿下参议院的控制权。
Republicans rolled up big victories on Tuesday and seized control of the U.S. Senate in midterm elections that tipped the balance of power away from President Barack Obama and will complicate 1 his remaining two years in office.
共和党周二在美国中期选举中大获全胜，成功夺得参议院的控制权，扭转了奥巴马一方掌权的局面。该结果将使奥巴马剩下的两年的任期复杂化。
根据美国宪法，美国总统选举（presidential election）每四年举行一次，国会选举（congressional elections）每两年举行一次。其中一次国会选举与四年一度的总统选举同时举行，而另一次则在两届总统选举之间举行。在两次总统选举之间举行的国会选举，就是“中期选举（midterm elections）”。
中期选举的日期大都在当年11月的第一个星期二举行。中期选举的实质是民主党和共和党争夺对国会的控制权（gain control of the Congress）。
最近的中期选举民意调查显示，共和党很可能仍然在众议院占有多数席位（remain control as a majority in the House），而民主党则需要挣扎一番才能保住他们在参议院的多数席位（defend their majority in the Senate）。
如果民主党失去对参议院的控制权（lose control of the Senate）, 也就是中期选举落败（a setback 2 in the midterm elections）, 这对奥巴马来说将是沉重的打击（deal a severe blow to Obama）, 他的政策将很难得到国会的支持（win congressional support for his policies.）
