Will Young在埃克塞特大学攻读政治学学位时就初尝表演的滋味。他最初的听众只是停车场里的几辆空车，他喜欢在那儿放声唱自己最喜欢的歌，这是他的朋友和父母以前都没有发现的一面。虽然韦尔在学校的表演中也上过舞台，可他从来没有那样用声音来表达自己。“我总是没有机会对着听众唱自己真正喜欢的歌，因此我就自己一个人在停车场唱。在舞台上我的歌声总是受压抑，我第一次有机会公开表现自己的能力，是在“流行偶像” 节目中唱《点燃我》。
