Cycling is very popular in Denmark’s capital Copenhagen. The city has hundreds of kilometers of bicycle lanes, and 20 percent of commuters go to work on their bikes. Now, a funeral director has made a bicycle hearse to ensure that some can make their final journey environmentally friendly.
Undertaker Sille Kongstad’s new hearse is about to make it’s debut, carrying 87 year old jazz man and environmentalist Hans Albertsen for his ultimate bike ride.

"Oh there’s a lot of love in this bike. A lot of love. I found some pictures of an old horse carriage, that they used before we got cars and I though they were very beautiful. And it gave me the idea to make this bike with a reference to the old horse carriage. I think it fits right in Copenhagen in Denmark. We love to bike,"
Kongstad said.
"I think it’s very much in his spirit. Sometimes we wore a sort of a mask. He lived in the city. But because of all the car pollution. He loved to ride a bike. So I think he would like that," Agnete Albertsen said.
"When I heard of Sille and her bicycle, I thought this is amazing. This is what we’re going to do. I think he’d love it, especially when we make a New Orleans march. I feel it’s a great day, this day. And I like to say goodbye to my father in this way. I think he’s grinning and laughing and sitting someplace seeing this stuff happen," Lars Albertsen said.
Sille Kongstad’s more traditional undertaker rivals mocked her for this bicycle hearse, saying that she was crazy. But after the success of this funeral suggests that she has made an excellent business investment.
This is the greenest mode of funeral transport. And for Hans Albertsen's mourners, knowing that they were honoring and celebrating the dead man’s environmental principles made his passing easier to bear.
