Wandering in Brazilian Forest

February 29th, 1832

The day has past delightfully 1. Delight itself, however, is a weak term to express the feelings of a naturalist 2 who, for the tirst time, has been wandering by himself in a Brazilian forest. Among the multitude of striking objects, the general luxuriance of the vegetation bears away the victory. The elegance 3 of the grasses, the novelty of the parasitical 4 plants, the beauty of the flowers, the glossy 5 green of the foliage 6, all tend to this end.A most paradoxica mixture of sound and silence pervades 7 the shady parts of the wood. The noise from the insects is so loud, that it may be heard even in a vessel 8 anchored several hundred yards from the shore; yet within the recesses 9 of the forest a universal silence appears to reign 10. To a person fond of natural history, such a day as this, brings with it a deeper pleasure than he ever can hope again to experience. After wandering about for some hours, I returned to the landing-place; but, before reaching it. I was overtaken by a tropical storm. 1 tried to find shelter under a tree which was so thick that it would never have been penetrated 11 by common English rain; but here, in a couple of minutes, a little torrent 12 flowed down the trunk. It is to this violence of the rain we must attribute the verdure at the bottom of the thickest woods: if the showers were like those of a colder climate, the greater part would be absorbed or evaporated before it reached the ground.I will not at present attempt to describe the gaudy 13 scenery of this noble bay, because, in our homeward voyage, we called here a second time, and I shall then have occasion to remark on it.

The geology of the surrounding country possesses little interest. Throughout the coast of Brazil, and certainly for a considerable space inland from the Rio Plata to Cape 14 St. Roque, lat. 5° S., a distance of more than 2000 geographical 15 miles, wherever solid rock occurs, it belongs to a granitic 16 formation. The circumstance of this enormous area being thus constituted of materials, which almost every geologist 17 believes have been crystallized by the action of heat under pressure, gives rise to many curious reflections. Was this effect produced beneath the depths of a profound ocean? Or did a covering of strata 18 formerly 19 extend over it, which has since been removed? Can we believe that any power, action for a time short of infinity 20, could have denuded 21 the granite 22 over so many thousand square leagues?

2.此句为一个强调句型,介词短语"to this violence of the rain"为被强调部分。固定搭配"attribute A to B”表示“把A归因于B”。此句中“attribute”的宾语为“the verdure at the bottom of the thickest woods"(郁郁葱葱的繁茂森林的最低处),介词短语to的宾语为“this violence of the rain"(猛烈的雨水)。

3.该句为一个简单句,主语“it”代指“the geology of the surrounding country",谓语部分为“belong to a granitic formation”。句首的两个分别由“throughout”和“for”引导的介词短语表示范围空间,介词短语“from the Rio Plata to Cape St. Roque. lat. 5°" S.”用于修饰"inland”,名词短语“a distance of more than 2000 geographical miles”作"inland”的同位语连词“wherever "引导的是地点状语从句,表示“无论何处”

4.该句的主语为"the circumstance of this enormous area”,分词短语“being thus constituted of  materials”作主语补足语,句子谓语为“give rise to" 。"
