尽管圣诞老人用缰绳来驾御他的驯鹿，但reindeer这个字却和缰绳没有任何关系。该单词由构词元素rein-和-deer两部分组成，deer即“鹿”的统称，而rein取自古挪威语hreinn（动物）。Reindeer最早被记录在1400年以前的一部作品中，属于中古英语。
