They don't live very long on average just a few weeks in the summer time. But in that time they'll fly four or maybe five hundred miles in total. and here's the best part. They are the only insect to provide us with food in the form of liquid gold, honey.But our bees are clearly in trouble. I've come to Heather Film's farm in *shire to meet commercial honey-producer Mark Newnon and to find out what's happening to his bees.
-You've got a fair numbers of bees down here, haven't you?
-Yes, this is one of our sites just outside G*. And before we've got 40 hives here. They've been here for about 3 or 4 weeks.
It's June, and Mark is landing 1 his bees to a local farmer to pollinate hundreds of acres of raspberries.
-So what is the deal between you and the farmer then here?
-Well, it's a natural symbiosis 3 way. He knows if our bees pollinate his fruit, he'll get a lot more fruit. He'll get better quality fruit. And we get the nectar from the raspberry which makes fantastic honey.
It's a deal that works 4 well for the bees and for the farmer.
-So these have been in full flower probably the last 2 or 3 weeks. As you can see, the fruit started to form already. It's looking really healthy. It's nice, nice-shaped to the berries 2 there, and that's gonna produce tons of raspberries.
But all these are not well at Heather's farm. Mark's bees are dying 5 and he has the empty hives to prove it.
