The typhoon had moved toward the province of Guangxi as of this morning but in just one day it wreaked 1 millions in damages to the neighboring Guangdong province. Rammasun is the ninth named typhoon this year but the strongest for China’s southern region in decades.

"We will patrol the entire area and respond to any reports on casualties, and if debris 2 has blocked the streets, we will help to clear it up," said Wu Guoqiang, soldier from Zhanjiang Frontier Inspection 3 Station.

As normalcy returns to the city, many are taking stock of damages as financial losses total into the millions. 450 thousand people were left devastated 4, and local government urgently evacuated 5 20,000 to higher grounds. Rammasun ranks at level 17 for a typhoon, at a force not seen by local residents in years.

China’s meteorological authority on Saturday maintains a top-level red alert for super typhoon Rammasun as downpours and gales 6 continue to sweep the southern coastal 7 provinces.
