Primrose 1是一种淡黄色的可爱花朵，名叫樱草花。它的花呈管状，聚集在一起形成伞形花序，花冠呈漏斗形或托盘状。Primrose起源于中古拉丁文prima rosa，意思是“早玫瑰”或“第一朵玫瑰”，这是因为它总是在早春绽放，所以primrose还有一个名字叫“报春花”。
我们可以想象，在草长莺飞的早春，漫步在一条两边开满樱草花的小径上，是多么惬意和美好的一件事，难怪a primrose path（布满樱草花的道路）用来指“无忧无虑的、舒适安逸的生活”。
和现在流行的许多词组一样，primrose path最早可能出自莎翁之手。早在1602年的戏剧《哈姆雷特》里，就有关于primrose path的记载：美丽纯洁的大臣之女奥菲莉娅（Ophelia）的哥哥莱阿提斯（Laertes）力主妹妹拒绝哈姆雷特的求爱，但奥菲莉娅一口回绝了他，并谴责他像个伪君子，她说：“Do not, as some ungracious pastors 2 do, show me the steep and thorny 3 way to heaven, whilst like a puffed 4 and reckless libertine 5, himself the primrose path of dalliance treads, and recks [heeds] not his own rede [advice].”
也许是出于对这个精彩比喻的喜爱，莎士比亚在他的另一部悲剧《麦克白》（Macbeth）里再次使用它，不过这次表示的是“a course of action that seems easy, but ends in disaster”，即看上去轻松容易，但会招致灾难性后果的做法。这种说法今天仍很常见，比如一个人如果被不道德的上司、朋友或股票经纪人蒙蔽，最终一败涂地，一无所有，我们可以说“he was led down the primrose path by an unscrupulous leader, friend, or, lately, stockbroker 6”。
