The United Nations General Assembly has re-elected U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan to a second five-year term.
"May I take it that it is the wish of the General Assembly to adopt the 1)draft resolution by 2)acclamation?" said Assembly President Harri Holkeri to 3)applause. He then officially declared Kofi Annan re-elected. Mr. Annan's current term actually has six more months to run and his early re-election is viewed as a strong vote of confidence by all 189 member-nations. The Assembly acted after receiving a 4)unanimous recommendation from the U.N. Security Council.
Mr. Annan, a native of Ghana and a career U.N. official, is widely respected for his 5)diplomatic skills, his extensive knowledge of the world and its problems, and his personal 6)modesty which was in evidence during his acceptance speech. "Wherever I have traveled in these past four years, and whatever issues I have tackled," he said, "I have been inspired by the sacrifices that the staff of the United Nations make, every day, on behalf of the peoples we serve. In peacekeeping operations, in 7)refugee camps, and in countless 1 other missions of mercy and of hope, their 8)dedication to the service of mankind is constant and 9)unswerving. Whatever I have achieved, I owe to their commitment and support, both in the field and at headquarters."
Although he is mild-mannered, Mr. Annan can be persistent 2. Many diplomats 3 say it was only because of his constant pressure that the General Assembly decided 4 to hold the recent special session on HIV-AIDS.
Mr. Annan says he will continue to work for U.N. reform to make the world organization more relevant and effective while remaining true to the principles of its 10)charter.
